Alien abduction pack–request for submissions and ideas

What would you carry if the aliens swooped down and abducted you?  Actually, that’s a joke.  But the idea of a “run out the door with the minimum essentials in your hand” bag or backpack is a good one. So what would *you* carry as an absolute essential if you had to run out the door because the house was burning, the floodwaters were rising and lightning was striking?

Here are some of my ideas, but this list is by no means comprehensive or complete.

pack it all in a Camelback or equivalent so you have a built-in water bottle
Leatherman or other tool
good utility knife
gloves
hand towel
propane lighter (not matches) & small bottle of lighter fluid.
candles
parachute cord (at least 30 feet)
flashlight
credit cards
cash
ID’s like driver’s license & passport
socks
underwear
Toothbrush & razor
soap
toothpaste
extra medications if you need them
tin foil
2 1-gallon-size ziplock bags
granola bars or equivalent for energy
Tang or powdered Gatorade
small medicine bottle chlorine bleach w/ eye dropper

I could go on but what else would You, O Reader, take?  Write in and let’s discuss.

ICE on your phone

Lance commented a while ago about how to put ICE on your IPhone–make it the wallpaper.  I thought that was a great idea.  But he didn’t go far enough:  Everyone with a camera phone should put their ICE information on the wallpaper of their phone.  That way there’s no hesitation.  There it is.

More (and for the moment last) Travel tips

OK.  Just a few more thoughts on travel safety:

1.  Leave the nice watch and jewelry at home.  A nice watch implies that you have a lot of money.  Wear a cheap one you can afford to lose. But, men, don’t wear a “military style” watch or you could be singled out for special treatment if they mistake you for a soldier on leave.

2.    Don’t order special meals. They call attention to you.  So I never order a Kosher meal on an airplane. Get vegetarian instead.

3.  I love pockets and vests.  That way I can carry all my stuff in them. Medication, glasses, whatever I can’t afford to lose it all fits into a pocket.  Better than a purse or backpack because it’s harder to steal.

4.  Don’t use your good cell phone.  Buy a cheap local local cell phone and get a pre-paid SIM card for it.  Cheaper, easier and if it’s stolen so what?

OK.  That’s it for now. Safe traveling.

Another 4 travel tips

1.  Learn a few key phrases.  Not just “where’s the bathroom?”  How about “Call the police!”  “fire!” or “May I see your ID (badge) please?”  You might also add “I don’t have any more money.” and “I left my passport in the safe.”  I’m sure similar phrases will come to mind.

2.  On a related point, Ladies there are many distasteful things you could say to an attacker that might dissuade him from raping you.  I’m not going to tell you what to say but telling a rapist you have an incurable disease or it’s the wrong time of the month etc. etc.  has been known to dissuade him.  It’s your choice but you should at least consider it and decide for yourself.

3.  Another related point:  Don’t try to be a hero.  Don’t be a smarta$$ to a guy with a gun. Be polite.  Do what they order your to do.  These guys didn’t grow up on movies and they know guns are for shooting people, not waving around like a magic wand.  They’ll shoot you in a heartbeat and laugh as you scream.

4.  When you get into a cab, keep your backpack in your lap.  In a crash it can make a dandy “airbag” to cushion a collision.

Fighting Words

I generally am a strong believer in free speech.  I truly believe that you should be able to say (almost) anything without penalty. That’s 1 reason why I get so upset at “contempt of cop” charges.  You shouldn’t be arrested just for saying something that the cop doesn’t like.

But there are limits and calling for the assassination of the President or judges goes too far.  In fact, the whole reason for this blog is because toxic words were becoming toxic deeds and too many lawyers and judges were getting shot , wounded and killed.  So I’m pretty upset with this raving idiot Hal Turner who has not only blogged that 3 judges who ruled in a way he didn’t like should be killed, he also put out a map showing the Courthouse where they work, the details of the bomb-blast barriers and, just to make sure everyone knew who the target were, he published the photographs of the judges.  Talk about a simple invitation to anyone who reads his blog!

What REALLY frosts me though is that he’s claiming the protection of the First Amendment.  Nonsense!  Disagree all you want.  Call for their impeachment if you like.  But to call for their assassination?  and publish their photographs and a map?  That’s too much for me  There is no excuse for this behavior and calling it the right to free speech won’t cut it.

A friend of mine went to Tokyo and, after work, went out for dinner & a drink.  He woke up about 6 hour later.  Many thousands of dollars on his charge card.  So, watch out for Mickey Finns.  For you younger readers, that’s a drugged drink.  Sort of like a date rape drink.  If you didn’t pour your own drink out of the sealed bottle, don’t drink it.  If they get cranky, just tell them it’s an “old american custom”.

Cabs are another major source for muggings, kidnappings etc.  Do not let a stranger select a taxi from the airport for you.   Actually, that probably applies at the hotel too.  Be sure the cab driver is licensed and her/his face matches the license photo.  If there is no photo or license, be careful.

Once you get into the cab (or a rental car for that matter) be sure to *all* the doors,  A favorite stunt is to pop a door, grab your bag, backpack or purse & run.

Finally, a frequent trick is a fake (or crooked) cop.  If a policeman tries to arrest you, demand to see some ID and use your cell phone to contact a friend.

Tips for when you travel internationally

Just a few tips for travelers going to a strange country or city.  Keep in mind that while a smile may be your umbrella, sometimes people want to steal the damn thing.  So the first 4 trips for travel are:

1.    Carry a cheap, spare throw-away wallet with a small amount of money and a junk ID. That way you can give them something while protecting the important stuff.

2.    Use a money belt or the equivalent to hide the important stuff like your passport.  (Do you have *any* idea how valuable a good US passport is?)

3.    Get a locking cable for your backpack or briefcase so you can fasten it to your bed, desk or even train seat.

4.    Put a chair under the door knob to your room and/or carry/make wedges to put under the door.  You really don’t want people breaking in on you without notice.

Iphone apps

I found a nice app for my Iphone recently. It’s “call 911”.  it’s free!  You just download it and it installs itself.  Then move it to the bottom bar of the Iphone.  Then it’s there all the time.  Press it and it automatically dials “911”.  There is a “cancel” button but otherwise it’s automatic.  Nice!  very nice.

Best advice I can give when talking to the police

Finally!  Now, finally, the national conversation about Professor Gates’s problems have moved beyond race and into the area where they belong:  “contempt of cop”.  But there is still a problem with the discussion:  it’s focused on minorities’ experiences with the police.  But that’s nonsense.  I don’t care who you are, how old you are, what race you are, anything.  If the police think you are not showing proper respect, you are going to be arrested.  And hassled.  And have to explain why you were arrested.  All because you didn’t give the cop proper respect.  Sometimes you have to decline to answer questions (like always) and the police arrest you just because.  Sometimes you have to stand on your rights and not let them search your car or house.  And they arrest you just because.  That’s the bigger issue and nobody is talking about it.

But the best advice I’ve ever seen in this whole mess comes from Bill Maxwell, in the Tampa Bay Times.  Maxwell says we “should be telling young black males [and everyone else] this: Without attitude or trash talk, obey when a police officer gives you a lawful order. Officers wear name plates on their shirts. Always memorize the name and rank of the officer you are dealing with for your lawyer if you think you will need one. You do not give up your manhood when you use your brains to survive.  When encountering the police, your goal is to get home unscathed and without getting arrested.”

We need to have a conversation about “contempt of cop” and the police abuse of their powers.

Parking Lots

When you park in your parking lot at work choose a space away from barriers that obscure your vision.  You don’t want to be surprised by someone coming out from behind a barrier or column.  Be sure to park in an illuminated area–I’m always surprised at how dark some parking lots are.  Listen.  If you hear something, walk away.  Listen again.  Approach your car at an angle so you can see all around it if possible.  You don’t want someone hiding.  Check the cars parked next to you.

If you are at all doubtful, get away.  Listen to your instincts.  Trust yourself.  It’s not stupid or silly to be careful.

You might also read some of my earlier posts about vans parked next to your car etc.

One final thought:  guys this advice is not just for the ladies.  You too are vulnerable.  Pay attention.
